journeyPod’s Scoop on the San Diego Film Festival

One of the younger film festivals around, The San Diego Film Festival (SDFF) celebrated its sixth anniversary this September. Held in San Diego’s main entertainment district - the Gaslamp Quarter - the Festival was a four-day fest that offered attendees a complete experience, filled with film premieres, educational panels, and nightly gatherings (drawing filmmakers and celebrities, alike).

Co-founded by an award-winning filmmaker, the San Diego Film Festival is dedicated to supporting diverse, independent films. Each year’s Festival works hard to program a line-up of nearly 100 films - from newcomers to future Academy Award-winning films. This year’s festivities also included the largest screenwriting conference in the nation.

Having earned an abundance of awards that include: Best Festival, Best Regional Film Fest, Best Beach Fest, and a coveted spot as one of the country's Top 10 Film Festival Vacations – naturally, journeyPod just had to check the San Diego Film Festival out! Then again, not that we needed another reason to visit a city that
boasts the best weather in the world, miles of sandy beaches and great major attractions (yep, we also hit up the San Diego Zoo and made a pit stop to greet Shamu, close up).

Whether choosing a relaxing day of checking out new films, hitting up one of the workshops or conferences to learn from the industry pros, or stopping by some of the parties – we realized that no single day was like any other during this four-day fest. And, that’s because the Festival allowed attendees to pick their premiere, pick their panel and pick their party. What could be better than that?

It also didn’t hurt that the events took place at some of San Diego’s trendiest hot spots!

A Little Taste of the Big San Diego Scene

The San Diego Film Festival kicked off with a bang at the “Opening Night Premiere & Party”, housed at The Ivy – one of the newest and sexiest boutique hotels in the Gaslamp. The party was presented by the Sundance Channel (talk about a great way to kick off the film festival) and was held on one of best rooftops with 360-degree views of the city!

An “Industry Party” followed on the same night (in case the previous festivities weren’t enough) at the W Hotel. Talk about a must for anyone looking to rub elbows with industry socialites.

The next day’s celebrations were also worth the trip. Held at the House of Blues, the “Actors Ball & Awards Ceremony” presented a great opportunity to don our newest rags and rub shoulders with some of Hollywood’s hottest. Hosted this year by Extra’s Michael Corbett with live beats from nationally recognized and renowned DJ, Ravi Drums, the event was… as executive director and founder of the San Diego Film Festival Robin Laatz put it, “incredible!”

Now… just in case those parties didn’t present enough socializing, the “Closing Night Film & Wrap Party” held at San Diego’s sleek and sexy Keating Hotel was there for us to mix and mingle.

Some of this year’s guests included: Donna D’Errico (Reno 911!, Austin Powers in Goldmember, Baywatch), Jennifer Tilly (Family Guy) - who won Best Actress for her role in Intervention, Scott Prendergrast (writer, director and star from the Festival’s opening night film, Kabluey), Dominique Swain (known for her role in Alpha Dog) and Ryan Donowho (The O.C.’s Johnny Harper).

Hungry and Thirsty After All The Schmoozing and Partying?
